Everything you need to keep track of papers
MyCite covers what most researchers use a reference manager for, from collecting papers to citing them in a manuscript.
-
Add papers in seconds
Paste a DOI and MyCite fills in the details from Crossref. Drop in PDFs, or add a paper straight from a journal page with the browser extension.
-
Read and annotate PDFs
A built-in PDF reader (the same PDF.js engine Firefox uses). Highlights, comments and drawings are saved into the PDF itself, so they open in any other reader too.
-
Folders, labels and stars
Organise your library the way you think about it, and find any paper again with search.
-
Any citation style
Search and install any of the more than 10,000 CSL styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago, Nature and IEEE, with a live example before you pick one.
-
Cite in Google Docs
With the MyCite extension, type
\citep{in a Google Doc, pick papers from the autocomplete, and format or update every citation in one click. The extension is in testing and not on the Chrome Web Store yet. -
Easy in, easy out
Import from BibTeX, RIS or CSL-JSON, so moving over from Paperpile, Zotero or Mendeley is quick. Your Drive folder always holds a BibTeX file you can take anywhere.
How it works
MyCite is a web app with no backend for your library. Everything happens in your browser.
-
Open it
Go to alighavam.com/mycite. You can start adding papers straight away, and install it as an app from Chrome or Edge if you like.
-
Connect Google Drive
One click creates a
MyCite Libraryfolder in your Drive. Your library and PDFs are mirrored there, so every computer you use sees the same library. -
Read, organise, cite
Add papers, annotate PDFs, and cite them in your writing. Changes sync in the background and the app keeps working offline.
Private by design
There is no MyCite database. Your library is stored in your browser and in your own Google Drive, and nowhere else.
- MyCite asks only for Google's
drive.filepermission, so it can see the files it created and nothing else in your Drive. - No analytics or tracking inside the app.
- Disconnecting Drive revokes MyCite's access at Google.
- Read the full privacy policy.
Questions
- Is MyCite really free?
- Yes. There is no paid plan. MyCite has no servers to pay for, because your library is stored in your own browser and Google Drive.
- Do I need to make an account?
- No. You can use MyCite without signing in to anything. Connecting Google Drive is optional and only needed to sync between computers and keep a backup.
- How is it different from Paperpile, Zotero or Mendeley?
- It works like Paperpile, in the browser and backed by Google Drive, but it's free and your data is never on someone else's server. Unlike Zotero there is nothing to install, and you can still export to Zotero at any time.
- What happens to my library if I stop using MyCite?
- Nothing is lost. The
MyCite Libraryfolder in your Drive holds every PDF and alibrary.bibfile that Zotero, JabRef and other reference managers can import. - Does it work offline?
- Yes. The library lives in your browser, so you can read and organise papers without a connection. It syncs the next time you're online.
